West Virginia Wesleyan College is strongly committed to providing excellent support to students with documented learning and attention difficulties. Our comprehensive program provides a solid foundational service delivered by master level professionals and two fee-based, optional programs assisting with the transition to college level academics.
The Mentor Advantage Program provides an innovative, individualized support developed from research on the transition and persistence of post-secondary students with learning disabilities and from self-regulated learning theory. Creating a bridge to academic regulation in the college environment, the program is composed of the following elements: one-to-one professional organizational mentoring and academic strategic content tutoring, and Day-Time and Evening Check-In. Taken together, the Day-Time and Evening Check-In provide the opportunity for 12.5 hours, each weekday, of study time in a quiet environment with access to a professional mentor.
In addition, Wesleyan offers an individualized clinical learning program that focuses on the improvement of reading skills and language. Although the program is not an official site certified and endorsed by Lindamood-Bell®, students work with instructors trained in Lindamood-Bell® Learning Techniques. Consistent application with this approach will improve skills required for accurate decoding, quick word recognition, and comprehension for the increased volume of information facing today's college student. Test scores and improved academic performance have validated a record of success with our students.
